About the course

In a world where the pressure to deliver is very intense and the stakes connected to decision making can be very high, decision making can be very high, decision making can become a highly emotive activity. This course is intended for leaders and team members who are looking to acquire the insights, skills, processes and tools that enable effective decision making.

This workshop is focused upon:

Recognising the difficulty of the decision making process
How to apply a structured approach to decision making
Setting the decision parameters
How to identify and explore the full range of choices available
Testing the logic of the decision

Learning outcomes to be covered

Introduction and objectives
Participants consider their personal and collective goals for the workshop, and set some ground rules to help them work together.

Personal drivers
Having examined the external climate for decision making, participants are invited to review their own “drivers”. These very strong and often sub conscious motivators can have a huge impact on decisions we make. By understanding our own drivers we can negate their possible bias when making important decisions.

Clearing the mind
We tend to pretend that decisions are based on rational thought and facts. Insights are offered on the psychology of decision making and the subtle influences of the conscious mind. A heavily loaded mind can generate bias, prejudice and protection urges that can all impact the quality of the decision process and decisions made. Tips and approaches are offered for recognising what is really going on, managing it and neutralising the impact.

Storytelling and decision making
Many decisions may be unique and testing. Each one will be decided on its own merits and will require a process. The stories we tell ourselves about the circumstances surround a particular decision wield a very powerful influence over the outcome.

The decision frame and diary
This unique tool is designed specifically for major decisions that may require auditing, justification and approval. The frame also provides a guide as a solid repeatable decision making process. Participants are encouraged to take a live decision through the frame. This part of the workshop is highly interactive and the Decision Frame is covered in some depth.

Decision making tools and team based decision making
A variety of decision making tools are covered, these being used in conjunction with an introduction to team based decision making. This allows participants an excellent method for creating, debating through and prioritising decisions.

Numbers and decision making
Applying numerical value and “weights” to options can help build a better picture of the decision to be made. A variety of numerically biased tools are covered with examples and opportunity for trial.

Workshop to workplace
This session reinforces some key points from the workshop as participants are tasked to clarify their intent and key actions post workshop – detailing what they intend to transfer into the workplace, how, by when and with what desired result.

Delivery strategies

This course is delivered in a face to face classroom situation led by a skilled facilitator.

About your trainer

Keith Whelan is an expert in Business communication, an area he has developed over the years working with large public and private organisations like NSW Health, Caltex Australia and ADCO advertising. Specialising in grants, tenders and funding consultancy, Keith has also consulted with and taught at a number of universities such as ANU Canberra, University of Adelaide, University of Sydney, UTS, University of Newcastle and Macquarie University and presently works with a number of companies across Australia in developing their respective Corporate Social Responsibility Strategies, Social Enterprise and Social Procurement strategies.
