Flamenco Dance Basics

The art of Flamenco results from a combination of the different musical cultures that developed in Andalucía, and which were passed on from generation to generation. Flamenco music has the ancestral footprints of Jewish, Arabic, Castillian, ancient Andalusian and gypsy music, that is, of all the people who passed through Andalucía.

This Introduction course will present some basic counts, arm and body exercises, some footwork at this level.

Basic Course Outcomes:
• Student will gain historical knowledge on the origins of Flamenco
• Explain the Songs and Dance categorisation : Chico, Medio , Grande (cante Jondo) forms Use handouts as a guide for a point of discussion.
• Begin dance techniques for arms, feet, palmas and dance
• Understand flamenco dance terms ‘ Marcaje’, ‘Filigrana’, Braceo, Tacaneo, Golpe, Planta, Tacon,
• Experience dancing a little por Tangos choreography with all the elements learnt.
• Count in Spanish, and learn new words in Spanish

Marina Tamayo:
Family from Granada Spain: Trained in Classical and Flamenco Dance, Music for over twenty years. Director and founder of Flamenco Australia that presents and supports professional Flamenco artists. Giving classes in Dance for over 25 years Marina Tamayo brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom to coaching professioanl levels and teachers.

Antonieta Manrique Mejías Foldvary (second instructor):
Venezuela. Trained in Classical and Flamenco Dance performed as a performing artist in Venezuela in theatres and tablao. Antonieta brings much knowledge and elegance in her classes offering a variety of styles. Trained in castanets, bata de cola, manton this dancer has over 20 years of dance training and has expert skills to share with her students of all levels. No Discount.
