Introduction to Phonics for Better Reading Outcomes

About the course

This NESA-endorsed workshop is suitable for K-2 teachers and pre-service teachers wishing to teach beginner reading. Teachers will learn a step-by-step, easy-to-difficult phonics-based strategies to assist children learn to read beginning with the alphabet, CVC words, and progressing to multi-syllabic words. If you have any students in your class who are reading below class level, then this course is specially for you. Lots of group activities to help improve understanding of the material. NESA points available for Proficient Teachers.

What you will learn

Learning outcomes to be covered in this course include -

  • Phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and introduction to phonics
  • Learning about the different types of phonics available
  • Learning about the phonics rules (generalisations)
  • Teaching pre-handwriting and handwriting skills
  • Step-by-step sequence on how to teach beginner reading at any age
  • Phonograms and word families
  • How to teach ‘whole language’ well
  • Group preparation of several lesson plans
  • Syllabication of written words
  • Understanding terminology, and
  • Lots of group activities for professional networking

Delivery strategies

Face to face tutor led classroom lectures including practical activities, role play etc.

If you have completed this 10 hours course, you can claim 9 ‘endorsed’ hours and 1 ‘teacher identified’ hours.

Tania Jamieson has 15 years teaching experience, specialising in teaching beginner reading to all ages and levels of ability. Tania is also a researcher, currently conducting research on phonics generalisations.
